Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
